According to standard baccarat rules, there are only two hands in play at a time, even when the table is full (14 players max. per table). Even if you’re not directly involved in the current hand, you may still place bets on who you think will win, so there’s not a long wait between betting opportunities. To start a baccarat hand, the banker will deal 4 cards, the 1st card goes to the player, the 2nd card goes to the banker (him/herself), the 3rd card goes to the player and the 4th card goes to the banker again. The player may then check their cards and make a decision about whether to take another. Standard baccarat rules state that the winning hand is the one that comes closest to 9 points. The points associated with the cards go like this: the non-face cards (except the 10’s) count their value in points, including the Ace, which is worth 1. The 10’s and face cards all count 0. So if you are dealt a Queen and a 3, your points equal 3. In other words, if the total is over 10, just take away the 1 from your total, and you’ll have the actually point value of your hand. Everywhere you go, baccarat rules will generally go as follows, as far as what happens after the first 4 cards are dealt:

1. No hand may contain more than 3 cards, so you’ll only get one more card if you want it.
2. If the banker or the player has a point total of 8 or 9 with their initial two cards, no more cards will be dealt to either hand.
3. The player must take another card if they have 5 or less, and must stand if they have 6 or 7.
   
   

Four Basic Tips for Beginners:

1. Set up your bankroll somewhere between 20 and 50 units, each about $5 in value. Baccarat is often a high limit game and you may have to risk at least 20 units of up $25 each, meaning a $500 bankroll.

Four Tips for the More Advanced Players:

Card Counting, a strategy which can be used to advantage when playing blackjack has always attracted attention among Baccarat players. Many players believe that is a possible method for winning at Baccarat as well. Here`s how it works:

Much as in blackjack, in baccarat the removal of cards during play creates situations where there is a change in the chances of attaining particular cards or combinations of cards. The removal of certain cards in some cases favors the Player and at other times the Banker.

If you have developed a good count strategy you will be able to recognize situations that favor betting for the Banker and others that favor betting for the Player. A good card counter may improve his or her chances and win money at the game of baccarat by the method of shrewdly alternating bets along with the count.

An accepted rule of thumb says that the high cards favor the Banker while the lower cards favor the Player. Other cards have only a minor effect and are considered as being neutral. Card counters track the removal of such cards as the game progresses and then bet for the Player when there is a higher ratio of high cards remaining in the deck.

1. Baccarat players seek out trends. The rollers watch for these trends and then consider whether to continue or reverse direction. A gambler will begin to bet on a streak taking place if the last 30 odd hands have been unpredictable. In order to do this, he will simply continue betting according to whatever the last hand was. So if the Player won, he will bet for the Player, if it was the Banker who won, then he will bet for the Banker. He may start raising his bet in anticipation of a favorable streak.

On the other hand, if the gambler notices that the shoe was streaky during the first 30 hands, he might decide that these streaks will reverse and will bet accordingly. When you notice a turn, you need to determine in which direction it is heading. Then you have to consider betting with or against it? In the end, you have to remember that this is gambling and therefore there is no way to know for certain in which direction things will go.

2. If the shoe is streaky with both P and B participating on short-term streaks, play these streaks to continue with a paroli of three. This simply means parley your bet twice, going for a win of three hands in succession. You bet $25 and win. Let it ride and bet another $50. If it wins, let that ride again and bet the $100. If you sustain a loss or after winning three hands in a row, revert to a one-unit bet. To start you paroli of three, you could either bet whichever won on the last hand. So if P wins, start with P, or go the other way, meaning that if P wins, start with B. Be consistent.

3. If you are playing in a choppy shoe, you should bet that the winner of the last hand will not win three hands in a row. If the last hand was won by P then you should bet $25 on B. If P wins again and you lose, then you should bet $50 on B. But if P were to win again, you should go all out and bet $100 on B. If you succeed in winning any of these three hands you will have won $25. If you lose all three of the hands, then your loss is $175. This would be a good time to sit out for a few hands or wait for a new shoe.

4. There are those players who see the consecutive occurrence of P wining, say after 30 hands, and then again after another 20. At that time things will even out as B becomes dominant during the next 30 hands. Note that a shoe contains about 60 hands. In this approach, you should take a conservative approach and flat-bet the second half of the shoe on the side that is now due to come up to even things out.

Baccarat is one of the easiest to learn. It is a game of chance and is usually played with eight decks of cards. Tens and face cards have a value of zero, aces count as one, and all other cards are equal to their value. Where the score is double figures, the first digit is dropped. Bets are placed on who will have a card total value closest to nine - the banker or the player or whether the two hands will tie. Player and the banker are each dealt two cards. If the player`s total value is 5 or less he will be dealt a third card. The banker will then be dealt a third card if the total value of his hand is now less than the player`s.

Each of the number cards is worth its face value. The aces are worth 1 and the tens together with all face cards are worth zero. Suits have no control over the results of the hand. In essence, there are two players who are dealt cards in the game, these are the so called "The Player" and "The Banker". The other players` goal is to bet on who they think will have the better cards of the two.

Some casinos let the players do the actual dealing while others will only trust their own dealers. In case the players are allowed to deal, the dealing runs around the table but it is not obligatory to deal and you may forfeit your dealer button while still reserving any options you have on making bets. If you do decide to deal, notice that you will be the dealer as long as "The Banker" wins, when "The Player" wins the dealing moves on to the player sitting on your left. Needless to say, at online casinos you will be automatically dealt.

Before the dealing all players at the table must bet on either "The Banker", "The Player" or a tie between the two. After all the bets are placed the player designated as the dealer (or the house dealer) deals himself 2 cards face down and another 2 cards to the player at the table who bet the most on "The Player" winning (notice "The Player" and "The Banker" are not set as they might change every hand).

Your goal is to pick either "The Player" or "The Banker" showing the hand with the highest total score. The score cannot be above 9 and in the case that it does reach a total higher than 9, the right digit will become the new score of the hand. If "The Banker" or "The Player" has a total of 8 or 9, they will both stand and no more cards will be dealt. If "The Player`s" score is 5 or less, he will hit another card, if not, he stands. In the case that "The Player" stands "The Banker" will hit another card if he holds 5 or lower.

The object of the game of Baccarat is to get a hand as close to 9 points as possible. While there are several variations of the game (often in countries outside North America it goes by a different name, and the rules differ as well), the basic goal alwasys remains the same: to get a hand with as close to 9 points as possible.

The form of Baccarat that is played in most North American casinos is often referred to as Nevada Baccarat (the game, once brought over from Europe via South America, originated in its American form in the state of Nevada). In European casinos – primarily French ones – you’ll find a variation called Chemin de fer. In this form of Baccarat, the casino does not play the role of banker. Rather, the players play the role of banker. There is not an option simply to bet on Player or Bank, you have to actually be Player or Bank. These terms, by the way, are also referred to as Punto or Banco.

You may be wondering where the name Chemin de fer comes from, and how it has anything to do with Baccarat. Well, it actually makes a lot of sense. Chemin de fer means “railroad” in French, and since the action around the table resembles that of a train, as the role of “Bank” rotates among the players, it is an apt description. Players have the option of declining the role of “Bank,” and when they do the option moves on to the next player to the right, and so on and so on. In effect, the shoe moves counterclockwise around the table, resembling the movement of a train. Another way of choosing the banker in Chemin de fer, or declaring who the banker will be, is by appointing the player with the most money to take on the role.

In Chemin de fer, the casino itself plays a fairly limited role and is not involved in the betting. It does provide a dealer to oversee the game (to insure that it is running properly and according to the rules) and it does supply the basic gaming equipment such as table, chairs, shoe (“sabot”), and cards. In return for these services, the casino takes a commission (usually 5%), on winning bank hands. This differs from American Baccarat, where the casino – against whom the player is playing – does not only provide certain basic equipment, but also provides the entire financial backing for the game.

Another difference between the two forms of the game revolves around the issue of drawing rules regarding the third card. In Chemin de fer, the player can choose whether to draw or to stand on five; in American Baccarat, the player has to draw if his total is 5 or less. Another indication of the increased flexibility in Chemin de fer is the fact that the play of the banker is optional.

Another variation on the game is what is called European Baccarat. In this form of the game, the player can choose to either stand or draw on 5, and the banker has the option to draw a third card (in these ways, European Baccarat differs from American Baccarat). In European Baccarat, the casino is responsible for financing the Banker’s hand. This means that if the Banker funds $1,500, and one player bets $1,000 and the next bets $500, no more players can bet. When a player calls out “Banco,” it means that he is prepared to cover the Banker’s bet, and again – no other players from that point onward can bet during that round. As with other forms of Baccarat, players who bet with the bank will be charged 4 or 5 percent of their winnings.

Baccarat en Banque is a variation you can find in some European casinos. In this form of the game, the house plays the role of Banker. As such, the bets can be quite high – as compared to what they are when a player is playing the role of Banker. Another interesting variation on a theme is that only one player is required to play Baccarat en Banque, while in Chemin de fer the minimum number of players is two.

The rules governing play in Baccarat en Banque include 1) one bank hand and two player hands are dealt, 2) players can bet on player hands but not on dealer’s hand and 3) drawing is optional, and is somewhat dependent on whether the dealer follows – or alters – American Baccarat rules. A few other details to be aware of: 1) the commissions charged by some casinos may be less than 5%, 2) payouts on the Tie bet are variable (e.g., could be paid out at 9:1 in some casinos), and 3) you’ll find that placing wagers in American casinos is done with real money while in European casinos, chips are generally the “currency” used.
